From steel and cranes to aluminium: the story of modern trench shoring in Australia

Trench shoring has been around as long as people have been digging deep enough to get hurt.

But the gear most Australian crews rely on today looks almost nothing like it did thirty years ago. The shift from heavy steel to engineered aluminium is one of the biggest changes civil construction has seen, and it happened because a supplier got tired of a problem nobody else was solving.

This is a short history of how trench shoring got to where it is, and where ShoreWorX fits into it.

When the Machines Got Smaller Than the Safety Gear

Rewind to the early 1990s. Something was quietly changing on Australian job sites: smaller excavators were becoming standard.

They were quick, they were affordable, and they could dig a trench deep enough to seriously injure or kill someone.

There was just one problem. The trench shoring available at the time was steel, and steel was heavy. A shield big enough to protect a crew often needed a crane just to lift it into place, which added cost, complexity and risk to every job.

It also meant the compact machines doing most of the digging had nothing they could safely lift and use.

That gap — a whole class of machine with no safety system to match — is where modern trench shoring really begins.

The Aluminium Answer

The obvious fix was a lighter material, and aluminium was the answer. Easy to say, much harder to engineer.

Early aluminium prototypes through the late 1990s eventually reached an 18 kPa Safe Working Load, right about the time the goalposts moved. The introduction of Australian Standard AS 4744.1-2000 lifted the minimum requirement to 20 kPa.

So it was back to the drawing board. Within months the design had not only met the new standard but laid the groundwork for something far more capable.

The first systems went into service on maintenance contracts around Melbourne and the Eastern Seaboard, and some of those original shields are still working today, decades on. In an industry where gear gets flogged, that kind of longevity tells its own story.

Engineering the Difference

The real turning point came in 2008, when two things arrived at once: high-strength 6082-T6 aluminium, and access to a new large-scale extrusion press here in Australia.

Together they unlocked a completely different way of building a trench shield.

Instead of welding heavy plate, panels could be built from interlocking extruded profiles — male and female sections that slot together. That change delivered:

  • Far less welding across each panel
  • More consistent, repeatable build quality
  • A better strength-to-weight ratio than anything before it
  • More than twenty new extrusion profiles in this period alone

It was not just lighter. It was smarter.

Built by Contractors, for Contractors

None of this came out of a lab. It came out of the trench.

The systems evolved because the people designing them had spent years in civil and drainage work themselves. The rental side of the business — which grew into ShoreWorX, formerly known as A-Plang — put the gear in front of contractors every single day and listened to what actually worked.

The result is a complete system rather than a single product. Three core extrusion profiles — 56mm, 90mm and 150mm — sit behind the ShoreWorX ranges:

Multiple engineered combinations within each panel deliver the strength different jobs demand.

The line even includes a 7.2 metre aluminium shield optimised for laying 6.0 metre pipe, a job a 20-tonne excavator can handle on its own. For comparison, a 6.0 metre steel shield weighs around 5 tonnes and usually needs a crane.

That is the whole point, in one number.

More Than Trenches

As crews adopted the systems, they asked for more, and the safety thinking spread with them.

Ladder access systems, telescopic walkways and trench bridges followed, each built on the same idea: practical, safe, and made for real site conditions.

Proven, Not Just Claimed

Success attracts imitators, and plenty have tried to match aluminium shoring on strength-to-weight. None have quite managed it.

Inside the business the reason gets a nickname — the “herbs and spices”: a mix of design, extrusion engineering, material science and hard-won contractor insight that does not reverse engineer easily.
