Aluminium vs steel trench boxes: which is right for your project?

If you’re new to trench shoring, start with our complete guide to what trench shoring is and why it matters →

Choosing between aluminium and steel trench boxes depends on the job.

Weight and machinery

Aluminium systems are significantly lighter than steel.

Benefits include:

  •  small or large excavations
  • Faster positioning
  • Lower transport costs
  • Reduced machine sizes
  • High Strength

Explore our available aluminium trench shield fleet →.

When steel makes sense

Steel may be appropriate when:

  • Excavations exceed aluminium capacity
  • Extreme surcharge loads are present

In these cases, engineering sign-off under AS 4744.1:2025 → may be required.

For site-specific advice, our engineering team can assist with system selection. Go to Engineer Support →

Conclusion

For most projects, aluminium trench shields offer greater efficiency and reduced risk while still maintaining  excellent strength.
